How to Measure for Curtains and Roman Blinds (Without Costly Mistakes)

Incorrect measuring is the most common, and most expensive, mistake in soft furnishings. Before cutting fabric, you must calculate carefully.

Measuring for Curtains

Step 1: Decide Pole Placement

Curtain poles are typically:

  • 15–20cm above the window

  • Extended beyond the frame

This creates height and allows light when open.

Step 2: Measure Width

Measure the full width of the pole.

Then multiply by:

  • 2x for pencil pleat

  • 2–2.5x for pinch pleat

This creates proper fullness.

Step 3: Measure Drop

Measure from:

  • Top of pole to desired finish

  • Just below sill, or

  • To floor

Always measure in three places and use the longest.
