Incorrect measuring is the most common, and most expensive, mistake in soft furnishings. Before cutting fabric, you must calculate carefully.
Measuring for Curtains
Step 1: Decide Pole Placement
Curtain poles are typically:
15–20cm above the window
Extended beyond the frame
This creates height and allows light when open.
Step 2: Measure Width
Measure the full width of the pole.
Then multiply by:
2x for pencil pleat
2–2.5x for pinch pleat
This creates proper fullness.
Step 3: Measure Drop
Measure from:
Top of pole to desired finish
Just below sill, or
To floor
Always measure in three places and use the longest.
Measuring for Roman Blinds
Inside Recess
Measure width in three places
Use the smallest measurement
Measure drop in three places
Use the smallest measurement
Outside Recess
Add overlap for light control.
Even small miscalculations can waste expensive fabric. If you’d prefer guided support, our Soft Furnishings Courses in Edinburgh provide hands-on measuring advice before you cut.
