Course Description Join this hands-on, one-day workshop in Edinburgh and learn the traditional techniques used by professional curtain makers to create elegant, hand-finished pencil pleat curtains. Taught in a small group of just 4 students, you'll get plenty of individual attention as you work through every stage of the process — from measuring and calculating fabric, to mitred corners, hand-sewn hems, and a beautifully finished pencil pleat heading. By the end of the day you'll have completed your own sample curtain panel (or small curtain of your own), understand the full process from measuring to hanging, and have the skills and confidence to make full-size curtains for your own home. What You'll Learn • How to calculate fabric and lining quantities • Preparing curtain fabric and lining • Hand-sewn mitred corners (using weights) • Herringbone stitch for side hems • Create hem in lining with sewing machine • Interlock lining to curtain fabric • Joining lining to curtain fabric by hand with slip stitch • Attaching pencil pleat heading tape with sewing machine. • Drawing up and evenly distributing gathers • Pressing and finishing techniques for a professional look Skills Required No formal sewing experience is needed to enjoy this course, although a basic familiarity with a sewing machine is useful. What to Bring • Just yourself — all tools and materials are included • A packed lunch – there is a 30 minute break. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout. • Optional: bring a notebook if you'd like to take your own notes alongside the course handout Materials All materials are included in the course price: fabric and lining for your sample panel, pencil pleat heading tape, thread, needles, and use of all tools (pins, scissors, tape measure, iron and board). Want to make a small curtain for your own home instead of a sample panel? You're welcome to bring your own fabric and lining if you'd like to work on a small curtain (up to the maximum size below) rather than a demonstration piece — just let us know in advance so we can plan cutting and pressing time accordingly. Maximum size: approximately 120 cm wide × 120cm. This keeps every technique achievable within the day. The skills you learn will let you make larger curtains at home afterwards. Spaces are limited to ensure personal tuition, book early to avoid disappointment.
